NPP Loses Majority in Parliament

By Aaron Grimes

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has just lost its majority in Parliament, following today’s court ruling for Sene West Constituency in the Wenchi District after legal tussle instigated by the NPP had failed to scuttle the win of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate in the constituency.

A high court in Wenchi today threw out the case brought against the EC and the NDC on the Sene West parliamentary elections by the NPP for lack of merit and “irredeemably incompetent” case to stop the final collation of results in the constituency.

The peeved judge who sat on the case slapped a GHC 20,000 fine on the NPP for pushing a legal case that was a total waste of time for all parties involved. Eventually, the outstanding polling station in the constituency was counted under court instructions, resulting in an NDC win.

As it, therefore, stands currently, the governing party has 137 Parliamentarians, while the opposition NDC has the same number of legislators (137), with one independent parliamentarian with strong leaning towards the NPP.

However, the NDC may overall emerge the majority in Parliament given the fact that the Electoral Commission (EC) is yet to carve out one more constituency out of the newly-created Guan District in the Oti Region. The OTI Region is an absolute political stronghold of the NDC, with the party snatching all the eight parliamentary seats there. The NPP secured zero parliamentary seats in the region.

From the voting pattern in the Oti Region, it is clear the opposition party has more plausibility of winning the yet-to-be-created Parliamentary seat.

More also, there are almost five more Parliamentary seats that the NDC is set to contest in court, including the Techiman South, Sefwi Wiawso, the Zabzugu, etc.

At the Zabzugu Parliamentary elections, for instance, the NPP parliamentary candidate, Jabaah John Bennam was declared winner under extremely fraudulent circumstances. Whatsup News has seen videos of his mafia-like declaration, where he and his agents basically kidnapped the EC official at the constituency to a secret place where the result declaration sheet was doctored.

Afterwards, the EC official was forced to declare Jabaah John Bennam winner in the constituency in the absence of all other political party agents, except for the NPP agents.
